My presentation was entitled, “Innovative fetal ultrasound education for midwives using Information Communication Technology in Tanzania.”
This conference is conducted based on the network of WHO Collaborating Centers, and WHO officers also participated in and keynoted. So it was important for me to attend the conference and share my experience with the global audience including important stakeholders. I presented on the second day about our multi-country collaboration.
In January 2018, I traveled to Tanzania to teach fetal ultrasound in collaboration with Taiji Clinic and Kanagawa Fetal Echo Meeting, connecting with Taiwan and Japan. I brought a phantom of Kyoto Kagaku Co., LTD., a portable ultrasound probe of Lequio Power Technology Corp. The seminar aims to introduce basic fetus ultrasound techniques to midwives in Tanzania and to pilot the distance learning system using ICT. In the seminar, Yi-Ying Li from Taiji Clinic taught midwives how to measure fetus (BPD, AC, FL) and amniotic fluid. I presented how midwives enjoyed and learned effectively in Tanzania.
The audience of the conference showed that they were impressed and asked how I plan to evaluate the effect of teaching after expanding this education. I answered that it is still in the pilot phase and am currently planning the evaluation from two sides: midwives and pregnant women. We may evaluate direct educational effects on midwives and in-direct effects on ultimate goal, improvement of antenatal care for pregnant women. Hope this project will continue with adequate funding so that we could achieve our goals: Providing quality antenatal care with ultrasound techniques in Tanzania.
